Special Needs Centres

Former special needs schools were restructured and recognised as special needs centres in 1993 (Link to legislation 15.Schog § 27/1) It is their task to provide and co-ordinate measures that ensure the best possible ways of educating children with special needs in regular primary schools.

In 1997 this was extended to secondary schools and grammar schools.

Apart from this they also function as special schools for the whole area giving the parents a real choice. Integration into mainstream education is the trend today and, as some would argue, is socially more acceptable. On the other hand, special schools have a lot to offer as well: teachers with the best qualification and a wealth of experience in the field, very good equipment and facilities, small groups, individual therapy, preparation for a life on their own after school, preparation for a job, ...

If you want to get an idea of how these schools work, the best thing is to look at a practical example like the Special Needs Centre Feldkirch.
