A brief look at the special children in class 3b

The most obviously disabled child is Patrik, who has got a severe disturbance of movement (cerebrale Bewegungsstörung mit spastischer Tetraplegie). He has to sit in his wheelchair or lie on the floor as his legs do not support him. His hands are also crippled so that he finds even simple activities like cutting a piece of paper difficult (Prof. Dietmar Dörler from the Teacher Training College Feldkirch is helping him). Nevertheless, he is a cheerful and witty boy and can be a lot of fun. There is also evidence of ability.
Teaching him takes a lot of time, patience, and also physical energy as he has to be supported when moved.

Kasim is a Turkish boy, who can barely write his first name on the computer and has not learnt to read or write yet, as his mental disability is severe (intellectual age of a two-or-three-year-old). Nevertheless, he can play a role in the classroom and participate in all kinds of activities as long as the teacher allocates an appropriate role. It is good to see how naturally he has been accepted into the class, how the best pupils help him just as much as all the others.
In the end, however, it did prove difficult to provide the right kind and amount of support in the context of the whole class. So Kasim left for the Lustenau Special Needs Centre for a one-month trial period. There he shared a class with three other pupils with similar problems and two teachers. For him this seemed the better choice - so he stayed there for the next phase of his schooling.

Dominik, Carmen, and Ahmet

These three children have an asserted need for special pedagogical support and could also be in an SNC. Their abilities vary considerably. Whereas one of them has just covered the 2nd-year curriculum in maths, the other is nearly up to the level of the regular pupils. Consequently, they need differing degrees of support, especially with regard to their activity level, some tending to be more independent and self-directed, others depending almost totally on teacher guidance.
